THE EVENING'S ENTERTAINMENT

After a brief introduction by your host, we will read a classic short story by M. R. James to put us in the perfect state of mind for what is to come.

After the reading all participants will take part in an experiment to see if the spirit of the father of Ghost Stories, M. R. James himself, can be persuaded to join us and communicate with members of the group.

MONTAGUE RHODES JAMES

M. R. James is considered by some to be the Father of the modern Ghost Story. His writing has given nightmares to generations of readers and has influenced and inspired many famous writers, artists and film makers.

He summed up his approach in his foreword to the anthology Ghosts and Marvels: "Two ingredients most valuable in the concocting of a ghost story are, to me, the atmosphere and the nicely managed crescendo. ... Let us, then, be introduced to the actors in a placid way; let us see them going about their ordinary business, undisturbed by forebodings, pleased with their surroundings; and into this calm environment let the ominous thing put out its head, unobtrusively at first, and then more insistently, until it holds the stage."

YOUR HOST

YOUR HOST - BARRY PRICE

I spent my youth studying parapsychology and hunting ghosts across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom.  I was an active member of The Society for Psychical Research for a number of years

I undertook and led many investigations and vigils in some of the most haunted locations in the U.K. specialising in the study and investigation of poltergeist type phenomena.

Like many past members of The S.P.R including Harry Houdini I have also had a lifetime fascination with magic. Bizarre magic allows me to combine two of my interests to create this unique experience.

MORE

If you are unable to attend An Evening With M. R. James but would still like to experience your own evening of the unusual please get in touch with me. I offer a range of events that you can experience in own home with groups of four to twelve people.

Might I also suggest that you partake in The M. R. James test.

THE M.R. JAMES TEST

1) You have to be alone to sit this test.

2) Find a quiet part of your home where you won't be disturbed.

3) Choose an M.R. James short story. (I recommend "Whistle and I'll Come to You)

4) Wait until dusk when the light is fading.

5) Turn on just one light – just bright enough to read by (A candle is also good)

6) Find an armchair and place it with its back to an open door in a bedroom or a sitting room.

7) Make sure that you are completely alone in the house and then sit in the chair.

8) Check that the door behind you is open.

9) Now the test. Can you read the whole story in one sitting without looking behind you or getting up to check that you are alone in the house. Running to hide under your bed is also classed as a fail.
